Cathedral Fascination — Size!

Awe-inspiring. Beautiful. Majestic. Amazing.

Imagine the impact a sight like this must have had on a medieval commoner coming to a town for the first time.

To get a sense of scale:

Chartres Cathedral, France

The message is clear – CHURCH: BIG! Man: Small.

Know your place, puny human.

Behold for yourself.

  1. It’s strange how so many people think of the Middle Ages as such a bland, dark time. While illiteracy, death, and fighting were prominent, it’s still amazing how the people could build such great castles and cathedrals– some of which were able to stand and remain in good condition for hundreds of years.

    • True that, Makenna. True that. I’m glad we don’t call them the “Dark Ages” anymore. That’s just misleading.

  2. These cathedrals are huge! I can’t imagine what it would be like to stand next to one.
